Legal Research Training in the Small Groups
Each small group is supported by a Legal Research Advisor (“LRA”) who works with the Coker Fellows to offer research classes that assist first-year students working on research papers and assignments for their substantive courses.  In addition, the LRA coordinates database training with Westlaw, LexisNexis and Bloomberg for the small groups.  Students who miss class during their assigned fifth hour can schedule a make-up session by appointment, or by attending a make-up sessions, which will be scheduled throughout the semester.

Introduction to Legal Research: Approaching a legal Research problem, finding resources, updating resources.  Occurs during the month of September.

Introduction to LexisNexis and Westlaw Training: Instructors co-teach a class that demonstrates in both databases how to search, how to find by citation, how to validate research, and how to save, print and email documents.  Occurs during the month of September. Register here. 

Researching with Bloomberg: Learn how to search Bloomberg Law, how to retrieve by citation a document, how to manage research and how to stay current.  Occurs during September and October - register here.  Make up sessions and one-on-one appointments can be made directly with Bloomberg.

Surviving Your First Brief Assignment: This program gives students techniques for researching a brief, including how to find the most relevant secondary sources and case law for any assignment.  This program will also give students the tools to properly format briefs in Microsoft Word, including how to create a table of contents and a table of authorities.  Occurs during the month of October.

Intermediate Westlaw and LexisNexis Training: Instructors co-teach a class that demonstrates in both databases how to formute and run advanced searches by a topic/headnote/keynumber, how to find cases through citing references, and how to manage research.  Occurs during the month of October.  Register here.
